Daimler today has unveiled the F-CELL Roadster, the latest in their line of “F-Series” concept vehicles, and it draws its inspiration from a diverse variety of automotive eras.

Controlled with drive-by-wire technology and utilizing a joystick rather than a conventional steering wheel, this whip is powered by a 1.2kW emission-free fuel cell system located at the rear.

It took a year and more than 150 trainees to create, but the entire project involved using “junior employees”, giving the company’s up-and-coming employees a creative way to learn how alternative-fuel systems come together.

Lamborghini Insecta Concept 3/5/2009 12:00:00 AM

. The carbon fiber-bodied Lamborghini Insecta concept (above) was created by Iulian Bumbu, a Romanian designer and graduate of the Alfa Romeo-sponsored Transportation Design Master Course at Milan’s Scuola Politecnica di Design (SPD). As the name suggests, the Insecta concept was inspired by the world of insects, particularly the armored casings which protect beetles.

The Insecta’s resemblance to a beetle’s sheath is especially apparent viewed from the side and above. The Insecta is similar in dimension to Lamborghini’s Gallardo, though it is lower and wider with a slightly longer wheelbase. It gets its power from the same 5.0 liter V10 engine and drivetrain found in the Gallardo, but the design enhancements and use of carbon fiber make it lighter and faster. A glass engine cover seamlessly blends into the glass roof providing a clear view of the mid-mounted engine for optimum visual appeal.

It has a 400bhp supercharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine and is designed to be light as well as luxurious. Nick Hall of the Times Online recently took it for a spin and found that it was both speedy and comfortable. The interior is done in leather and carbon fiber and includes Bluetooth and wifi internet access. All this and it is said to get 51 mpg. Hall calls it a work of art. It is supposed to be out next summer and costs 135,000 euros.

The last car to be produced under the MB/McLaren union. A first glance at the car’s exterior features an innovative long-reaching frame with a special windshield-less experience for an unsurpassed road experience. With a legendary racing pedigree, the SLR also pays homage to British race car driver Stirling Moss, who’s still the current record holder for the Mille Miglia. On a performance side of things, the SLR Stirling Moss will make the sprint of 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 217 mph despite the seemingly unaerodynamic cockpit.

The carbon-fiber body, which (aside from the adjustable front wing) bears a startling resemblance to the Ferrari Enzo, is laid over a carbon fiber chassis for a sprightly low curb weight of 1,200kg (about 2,600 lbs). Power is provided by the 7-liter pushrod V8 out of the Corvette Z06, tuned from the stock 498 hp up to 530 thanks to new intake and exhaust systems, driving the rear wheels through a manual Graziano gearbox and kept in check by AP Racing brakes. The supercar is expected to sell for about 170k pounds sterling – a fair bit less than the £220k a Lamborghini Murcielago will cost a British customer – and begin delivery sometime next year.
